Dear PKU Family and Friends:
My name is Pat Byrne and I have a daughter Krista who is 13 years old with Classic PKU. She came to me with the suggestion that we try a cruise for the PKU families after learning that many families seem hesitant to try this form of travel that we so love. She thought it would be more fun to meet other children with PKU in a social environment without it being all about education, meetings, cooking classes etc. about PKU. She stated that PKU is not who she is but only a small part of the person she is and wouldn't it be nice to meet other kids in a social environment where they could have fun and get to know each other over a period of a few days instead of hours and not have PKU be the main focal point. I agreed and this is how all of this has come about.
Please join us for a 4-Night Cruise departing New York going to Halifax, Nova Scotia on July 18, 2002 on Carnival Cruise Lines, Triumph. I have been working with my Regional Sales Manager and the Food and Beverage Director for Carnival to ensure that this is a success. I felt that we needed to start with only a 4-Night Cruise to ease everyone into the cruise experience.
We will be able to have some low protein foods available at breakfast, lunch and dinner in the main dining room. There is always salad, fruits and vegetables (fresh and steamed) available. You would need to supply any special snacks i.e. Uncle Henry's Pretzels, cookies, etc. The low protein milk could be made using a Tupperware shaker and then storing it on ice in the ice bucket if you need to keep it cold for any length of time.
I have enclosed all of the pricing information, registration form, food survey and a brochure of the itinerary and ship (2001 not 2002 - they are not in print yet). The ship will not be the Victory but the Triumph and the ships are identical in their layout. If you are interested in different accommodations than what has been placed on hold, please contact me and I will price this for you. If airfare is required from your home city, I can arrange this through Carnival. This cruise can only be booked though this office because of the low protein food involved and the coordination of the amount that will be necessary.
The reason we are planning this so early is the best pricing is available the farther out you book and in order to accommodate the special foods we are requesting, they only allow a specific number of groups needing special requests on any sailing. The prices are not guaranteed once the initial quantity of cabins on hold is gone.
Please join us for our first PKU Cruise and feel free to invite any family members or friends who would like to travel with us. I know that there will be many questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at (610)277-6850 or by e-mail: wecruise@bellatlantic.net.
Regards,
Pat Byrne
